Unfortunately trying to google this just brings up that smartphones can detect IR, not which ones emit IR. Some smartphones also give off IR signatures - I'm not sure which ones or if this is universal. That means at all times this camera is emitting an IR light. ![]() Most modern video cameras have an autofocus 'beam' that is stabilized using, you guessed it, infrared technology. This appears to be an actual video camera and not a smartphone. Note the camera's zoom towards the latter half of the video. I want to take a moment to address why this footage in particular was so reckless and dangerous: War correspondents often talk about the dangers of getting immersed in your camera and subconsciously forgetting it's real life. Especially with the sort of 'tunnel vision' that a person experiences when focusing on filming. ![]() ![]() But I feel in the West's voracious appetite for footage from this conflict, people are losing sight of the dangers and putting inexperienced civilians at risk. I know we want the world to see what is happening in Ukraine. While we can commend the cameraman's bravery, he was a few inches away from losing his life, and over what? A blurry video of a tank.
